President Jessica Quint Takes Office, July 2010
Terry Fursteneau, Past-President (left)

Local Dentist Jessica Quint began a one-year term of office last week [June 30] as president of the Fayette Rotary Club.  Here, she accepts the gavel of office from outgoing President Terry Furstenau, Howard County cattle farmer.  Michael Pope, CMU's United Methodist Church liaison, is Rotary's new vice-president/president-elect.  Continuing in office are club secretary Don Cullimore and club treasurer Charlie Moore.  Founded here in 1937, the club has approximately 50 members and gathers weekly for a noon Wednesday luncheon meeting in the CMU Student and Community Center.

Message from the President

I want to begin by thanking you all for your vote of confidence in making me your President this year.  I will do my best to live up to your expectations.  However, if you have any constructive criticisms do not hesitate to bring it to my attention.  This is a new venture for me and I want it to be a positive experience for us all.

My goal for our club this year is to educate us all more on the functions of Rotary.  I will be the first to admit that I do not know enough about how Rotary works once we leave our weekly meetings.  What is the difference between Foundation, International, etc?  What is a Matching Grant? How does it work? Who is Paul Harris?  Why do I want to be a Fellow?  What is a District Governor? Why do we need one?  What is the Club Chair’s role?  These are all questions I have had and I expect I’m not alone.

Another goal I have, I’m sure, is one that I share with past-presidents; I want to increase our membership.  It’s less than $10 to treat a friend or colleague to a great meal and an informational program.  We should all try to include someone new at least once every couple of months.  You may be surprised what someone new can contribute to our club.  New members, in any group, always seem to have the most energy.  We could all use a little boost now and then.

Please, help me help you this year have the best Rotary experience possible.  Being a Program Chair is one of the biggest ways you can help.  As of right now, the book is wide open to fill our weekly programs.  If you are at an event in which a program that you enjoy is presented, ask the presenter if they would be willing to visit our club.  They only need 15-20 minutes worth of material.  This is a great way to educate ourselves about the world around us.

Again, thank you for allowing me to be your President this year.  I look forward to continuing on the tradition our club founders established.  Remember: Service before Self

Yours in Rotary,

Jessica Quint
